Singapore Strengthens Its Position as a Global Shipping Hub

Singapore continues to cement its role as one of the world’s most important maritime gateways. In 2024, the port — ranked the second busiest container hub after Shanghai — achieved record throughput across multiple categories.

The port handled 41.12 million containers (20-foot equivalent units) in 2024, up from 39.01 million in 2023. Cargo volumes also surged, with 622.67 million tonnes processed in 2024, compared to 592.01 million tonnes the previous year.

To meet rising demand, Singapore currently operates 11 container berths, with seven additional berths planned, expanding its already world-class infrastructure.

In addition, the city-state remains a global leader in bunkering, the supply of marine fuels to ships. Volumes climbed to 54.92 million tonnes in 2024, up from 51.82 million tonnes in 2023, reinforcing Singapore’s role as a critical energy hub for global shipping.

This growth reflects Singapore’s enduring importance in global trade and logistics — creating opportunities for shipping companies, exporters, importers, and service providers that form part of the maritime ecosystem.
